Itzhak Perlman-Rachmaninoff's Vocalise

Vocalise - Rachmaninoff

I sometimes wonder what my non-student life will be like. I've been a student for 20 years now. I don't think I'll know what to do with myself when I'm in the "real world."

However, I do know some of the things that I want to do and have once I have a steady schedule.

1. I want to have a garden. Herbs, veggies, fruit, flowers, everything.
2. I want to quilt. I know how, but I just never have the time. I already know my first project.
3. I want to learn how to can foods. Jellies, jams, pickles, veggies, etc.
4. I want to learn how to cook and be known as a masterful cook by any standard.
5. I want to learn how to sew my own clothing.
6. I want to make myself sit still long enough to crochet an entire afghan.
7. I want to get married and have babies.
8. I want to have a beautifully decorated home.
9. I want to own an old house with character and history.
10. I want to relearn how to play the piano. Over 3 years of not really playing has made me forget.
11. I want to own a baby grand piano for me to relearn piano on.
12. I want to own and know how to use a digital camera other than a point-and-shoot.

I guess that's a decent start to this list for now.

If I were a month, I would be May. Spring and summer all mixed up. :)

If I were a time of the day, I’d be Late afternoon. busy but slowing down.

If I were a planet, I would be earth. I like it. It’s pretty. And has breathable air.

If I were a direction, I would be South. Southern is better says the Georgia girl.

If I were a piece of furniture, I would be a futon. Multifunctional and comfortable.

If I were a liquid, I would be fresh limeade. Or seawater. I’m just that awesome. ha!

If I were a gemstone, I would be turquoise. Unique and adaptable.

If I were a tree, I would be a sugar maple.

If I were a tool, I would be a chain saw. Just because.

If I were a flower, I would be a either lavender or tiger lily.

If I were a kind of weather, I would be partly cloudy. Sunshine and shade. Happiness and sadness.

If I were a musical instrument, I would be a piano. Very adaptable to different moods.

If I were a color, I would be saturated grass green or the color of Merlot.

If I were an emotion, I would be somewhere between joy and indifference.

If I were a fruit, I would be a pomegranate.

If I were a sound, I would be wind through pine trees.

If I were an element, I would be earth or water. I can never decide which I would rather be.

If I were a car, I would be something that gets high gas mileage and is small and reliable. ;)

If I were a food, I would be pasta. How it turns out depends on what’s added to it.

If I were a place, I would be a mountaintop or a sand dune by the sea.

If I were a material, I would be wood. Strong but not indestructible.

If I were a pair of shoes, I would be black, pointy-toed flats.

Yoguri, Athens, GA

Tried a cute, little yogurt shop a few weeks ago. It's called Yoguri, located in Downtown Athens, GA. Very modern interior with lots of white, bright light. And they use all fresh ingredients. Just look at this yumminess. :)

If you're ever in Athens, GA, definitely look it up. They don't have a website, but they do have a Facebook fan page. Definitely worth the experience to visit Downtown Athens (especially during the day when the shops are open) and enjoy some of this delicious yogurt. :)

Wednesday. 7.21.10

I got really, really good news a couple days ago. I got the job for the law clerk for the superior state court judge in my circuit for the year after I graduate. That took so much stress and anxiety off my mind. The job will pay nice for a first job, and I'll be able to live with my parents to cut down on expenses and take an extra year trying to find a permanent job. Now all I have to worry about is passing my last year of law school and passing the bar exam. Piece of cake! 0_0 (that's my scared face by the way)

I leave for vacation in 10 days. I. am. so. happy. I've been waiting for this vacation since the first of May. No, really. I feel like all I do now is work. Welcome to the real world, right?

I'm planning on taking lots of pics of vacation and probably posting a few of them on here when I get back. I plan on having the best week of my year! Especially since the Monday after vacation is over, the last year of law school starts with a vengence. I can do this!!!! Power of positive thinking! haha!

Ok. That's enough of an update, I guess.

Sunset July 12, 2010

This week so far (week of July 11, 2010)

Church on Sunday was good. I really enjoyed both sermons and didn't mind-wander very much at all. That's a huge success! Trust me. :) Ate lunch at Pizza Hut. Mmmm... Cheese breadsticks. Then just relaxed and read for the afternoon. I've been reading a book series called Sisters of the Quilt by Cindy Woodsmall. The series is based around an Amish girl who is forced to leave her community and start a new life for herself in the "world." Not a literary masterpiece by any means, but I still have enjoyed the series (I finished it Monday night). After reading for the afternoon, went back to church for the night service then to a El Manzanillo Mexican restaurant with a large group from church. Always fun. And Chris bought me a pack of violet flavored chewing gum. I don't know why I like it so much. It tastes like Mr. Bubble bubble bath, and everytime I chew it, I think about making bubble beards in the bath tub when I was a little girl. I'll still continue to chew it though, regardless of the fact that it tastes like bubble bath. :)

Monday, back to work at the law office where I am interning for the summer. I waited the entire day for a file to come across my desk so I would have something to do, but nothing ever appeared, so I just bummed around on the internet instead. The attorney's son, Jim, started working for him full time yesterday. Jim graduated from law school last year and has been law clerk for the superior court judge in our district for the past year. The only empty office space in the building is now his, so I'm set up in the conference room for the last three weeks of this summer. Not that I mind too much. ;)Went to court for a few minutes Monday morning with Mssrs. Attorney and Son. The courtroom probably had a hundred people in it waiting for their case to be called. In this small town, that's a huge crowd. We got our business done pretty quickly in the judge's chambers though, so we didn't have to wait in the neverending line.

Today, Tuesday. Work again. Court this morning. I really need to meet with that superior court judge to talk about working as his clerk next year once I graduate. That would be a good decision. After we left court, Jim reminded Mr. Attorney dad that it was mom's birthday, so we went by the florist. Mr. Attorney had no clue what to get her (side note: I seriously love this man. Get him in the court room, and he's sharp and on topic. When it comes to everyday, nonlegal things, he's a scatterbrainded as anything!). The florist told him that his wife liked daisies. So he said daisies would be nice. Then she said she liked them in a basket. So he ordered daisies in a basket (which I think shows that this florist knows her business since daisies in a basket are probably the most expensive way to present cheap daisies). ;) Back to the office after that where I finally got a file. Apparently though, from the fact that I'm writing this blog instead of reading the file, it's not really keeping my attention too well. Back to it, I guess.

Here's some daisies in a basket. :)

James, the Son of Thunder

Yesterday morning in church, my pastor preached out of Acts 12.

At the beginning of the chapter, Herod Agrippa I has just started his persecution of Christians in Jerusalem. Now the chapter is mainly about Peter and his miraculous release from prison. However, my pastor spent a while talking about v.2 of that chapter - a verse that I have read over and over again without really thinking about.

Verse 2 says that Herod killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.

But who was James?

James and John were two of Jesus' 12 disciples when he walked on earth, and since they were part of the 12, they were considered apostles by the early church. They were the sons of a man named Zebedee and had both left their father when Jesus came by their fishing boats one day and said "follow me." No hesitation. No questions asked.

Jesus described both James and John as the "sons of Thunder." They were almost always in His inner circle and spent much time learning from Him and seeing the miracles that He performed.

With a name like a "Son of Thunder," I can't even imagine the boldness and zeal that these two men possessed. That boldness is probably what caught Herod's attention. James was outspoken and loud about his faith and his God. He was a threat to Herod's hopes for power in Jerusalem. So he had him captured and killed. And the Jewish leaders of that day rejoiced for it. James was not the first Christian martyr (that was Stephen), but he was the first apostle to be killed for his faith in "this Jesus."

James is now considered a Saint by the Catholic Church and even the patron saint of Spain.

His brother John went on to live a long life and wrote the Gospel of John, which was an account of Jesus' life on earth. John also wrote many letters and also the book of Revelation.

This pair of brothers is an inspiration and encouragement to me. They decided to devote all of their passion and boldness and zeal to this Nazarene named Jesus, this Son of God.

Their impact has lasted millennia. And that impact will continue on in eternity.

100 Layer Cake
"My life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars - points of light and reason...and then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliance, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no reason for anything."
— Stephenie Meyer (New Moon)
